Peony in Love

Wow.

TOTALLY different than the other two "See" novels I have read: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Dragon Bones.

There is nothing I can describe that wouldn't be a spoiler, except that the setting in China is a place that Sherlocks and Mom and Dad toured.

It is a very different novel. Get out there and borrow this one so we can all discuss it! It's hardcover, not sure I would recommend you buy it.... dust off your library card, or get my mom's copy, we are waiting to hear more opinions!

I would love to borrow that one when I am in Regina if no one else has claimed it! I am just finishing "A Thousand Splendid Suns" which I am really enjoying. Quite different from "The Kite Runner" but equally fascinating.
Finished "Rise and Shine" before that and liked it too - I will bring it back next week.
Happy Reading!

I am very much looking forward to reading Lisa See's new book and also liked "A Thousand Splendid Suns" alot. I am currently enjoying "Tamarind Mem" (recommended by you and Kelly). I'll also read "The Hero's Walk" because I am liking this one so much. I don't know why I find the books concerning India, China, etc. so appealing but guess it is because of the fascinating cultures and history. If you are into watching movies, rent "Partition". We watched it a couple of days ago and enjoyed it. The story is based around the partition of India (Pakistan) after the British left. So much hate and misunderstanding - again the inheritance of loss! Lorraine

I really liked "The Madonnas of Leningrad" too!

Now, this is an interesting book. The story takes place in Hangzhou and that is one of the cities we visited last summer; so that made it so easy for me to visualize the setting. I still preferred "Snow Flower" but found this one well-written and well-researched. I would have benefitted a lot from reading the "Author's Note" first. Too bad it is at the back of the book. I don't think knowing some of the plot in advance would have spoiled it for me. I would have liked to know that it was based on a real opera and that the published writings referred to in the book are real. The Chinese religious beliefs and customs relating to death and the afterlife are truly fascinating. This book would make for a great book club discussion!
