Body Surfing by Anita Shreve

Uh.........didn't really like it and DEFINITELY not one of my favs of Anita Shreve, it would in fact be very near to the bottom. I didn't like the writing style, didn't find the book credible or believable.

I did read the whole thing, and she still is a gifted writer, I just did not like the style (or a lot of the substance, for that matter)

I see that you've got Jeffrey Euginides "Middlesex" coming up. I loved that book. Definitely one of my all time faves.

Haven't read this book and won't after your review. Think I mentioned before that I am "off" Anita Shreve right now, even though I enjoyed many of her books in the past. I'm reading "Through a Glass Darkly" (Karleen Koen) right now and can't say that I am loving it so far. That could change as I am on page 78 of nearly 700 pages! I get bogged down in over-detailed descriptions (i.e. of a room) and this book is full of this so far. The storyline will prove to be interesting, I think, but time will tell. This is our summer book club selection. When I finish it, I'll let you know if it gets my seal of approval as a "good read". Lorraine

I didn't care for this one either - quite far-fetched and predictable. I just finished "Peony in Love" and liked it - halfway through wasn't sure but in the end found the details on the afterlife (Chinese beliefs) fascinating. Just started "Dragon Bones" and will let you know. So glad that you're feeling well enough to read!

Over the years I've read all but one of Anita Shreve's novels, and have been enjoying them less and less. Too bad I forgot that fact when I bought this one. I was taken in by the reviewer in "The Globe and Mail" who gave it a favorable review and mentioned that her favourite Shreve book was "The Last Time we Met"--a book which is still on my list of favourites (for all authors). But "Body Surfing" was a huge disappointment. I didn't like the writing style, the implausible plot or the lack of character development. The one interesting aspect of the book is its setting--which is the same house that was featured in "The Pilot's Wife", "Sea Glass" and "Fortune's Rocks"--all set in different time periods. However, I don't think I will be reading any more of her books. Eileen
